Adult Classes
The Alliance Française French Institute of Michigan has a wide variety of courses at all levels and interests. To learn more about the language curriculum, click on a level:
Speak French from day one! Beginner A1 classes help build a solid foundation in the French language. Authentic situational exercises introduce you to the structure and usage of the language in everyday life.
Level A1 Objectives
- Learn to understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
- Introduce him/herself and others. Ask and answer questions about personal details, and have simple conversations such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has.
- Interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
What you will learn:
101 (Units 1 & 2) Level A1
Spell and count / Greet somebody and say goodbye / Introduce yourself and someone else / Explain why you are learning French / Ask simple questions / Express your likes and dislikes / Give and ask basic information of someone such as name, email, phone number, age, nationality and profession / Describe objects and give a money value to them / Describe a person’s clothing
102 (Units 3 & 4) Level A1
Give and ask for directions / Give the date and time / Describe your day / Talk about what you do on the weekends / Discuss your hobbies / Give an advice
103 (Units 5 & 6) Level A1
Talk about what you did in the past few days / Talk about what you did during your vacation / Talk about jobs and education / Give advice to someone who is looking for a job / Order in a restaurant and ask for the check / Talk about food in quantities / Express your satisfaction and dissatisfaction / Learn about French savoir-vivre
Level A-2 Objectives
- Understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal & family info, shopping, local geography, employment).
- Communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
- Describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate basic need.

104 (Unit 7) Level A1
Talk about tastes and preferences / Express and contrast your opinion / Give an opinion / Give advices / Get and give information about a trip / Express how frequently you do things
105 (Unit 8) Level A1
Talk about your schedule (in the past and for the near future) / Tell about a recent event or past habits / Describe a past event and the context of the action / Situate events in time
106 (Unit 9) Level A1
Give a condition, a probability / Make projects / Give an intention / Talk about the future
Intermediate courses at the B1 level continue to reinforce oral and written communication skills, emphasizing everyday topics
Level B1 Objectives
- Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
- Can deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in an area where the language is spoken.
- Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar, or of personal interest.
- Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes, and ambitions, and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

201 (Units 1 & 2) Level B1

202 (Units 3 & 4) Level B1
Expose a problem / formulate a hypothesis / give advice and solutions / talk about our professional life and experience / locate in the past / Talk about memories / compare education systems
203 (Units 5 & 6) Level B1
Talk about your hobbies / justify your choices / explain the causes of a phenomenon / give the summary of a trip / talk about your motivations and your habits/ give a point of view.
204 (Units 7 & 8) Level B1
Defend your viewpoint / express a wish or a doubt / report what somebody else said / make a statement / express a doubt or a necessity / inform about rules in society
205 (Unit 9) Level B1
Give a news tell by the media / give the origin and the consequences of a fact
Level B2 Objectives
- Understand the main ideas of both concrete and abstract topics in complex texts, including technical discussions in a field of specialization
- Interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers confortable without strain for either party.
- Produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
What you will learn:
Develop better conversational French skills! Learn how to apply the grammar learned in general French classes and explore how it is used in spoken French.
Each teacher selects either a grammar book, vocabulary book, easy-to-read novel, short news article or videos to achieve the goals of this course. Discussions are followed by review of the grammar in context. Students are also given additional grammar assignments.
In this course you will:
- Learn to express in a simple way your opinions and point of view
- Review grammar points in context
- Broaden your vocabulary
- Improve your listening comprehension skill
- Summarize and discuss a short text
- Work on improving your pronunciation

- Maitriser la grammaire d'un niveau en travaillant sur la methode: Cours de civilisation de la Sorbonne.

Level C1 Objectives:
- Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning.
- Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.
- Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes.
- Can produce clear, well structured, detailed text on complex subjects. Showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors, and cohesive devices.
Level C2 Objectives:
- Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read.
- Can summarize information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation.
- Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.

Recognizing the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) as a solid ground for understanding French as a Foreign Language teaching, learning and assessing, project AF FRAMES seeks to adapt the CEFR philosophy and components to the American context and specificities.
Language classes at the AFFIM cover 4 levels: Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced and Experts. These 4 levels follow the CEF Global Scale: Basic User Levels A1 and A2; Independent User Levels B1 and B2; Proficient User Levels C1 and C2.
